Welcome to our site
If you are looking for space to reflect or to meet with others, then why not try Shepherds Dene?
Shepherds Dene is an excellent venue for a conference, away day, meeting or seminar. Alternatively, if you are simply in need of a day or a few days just to get away from it all, then come and feel the tension evaporate in the calmness of the house and grounds.
The house is an Edwardian country house, built in the Arts and Crafts style, and set in 26 acres of grounds. The estate was given to the Church of England in 1945 to be used as a retreat house and is within easy of reach of Newcastle, Durham and Carlisle. It is a spiritual place for peace and quiet and sometimes for fun and celebration as well.
Shepherds Dene serves the Dioceses of Durham and Newcastle as diocesan retreat house. It provides a space to think, a chance to grow and to walk more closely with God. We welcome guests of all denominations and faiths – and those without a faith.

The best retreat house in the country
I am totally blind and was a bit apprehensive about coming to somewhere unknown, but I needn't have worried. Please convey my sincere thanks to Moira, Barbara and Marian for their help and support. The little things make all the difference don't they and I must say that you were all so very helpful and understanding. I would have no hesitation in visiting again.
We really valued the competence of all the arrangements for the weekend, and the excellent meals provided. Shepherds Dene in its new incarnation is a real delight to visit and we hope for other opportunities to do so.
I've been running residential courses for 30 years now and Shepherds Dene is the best venue I've ever used. The acceptance and warmth that we experienced fmade us feel very welcome and gave us the space and freedom to be how we needed to be. We have been searching for a good long term venue for a few years now and at last it feels like we have found our new home.
The Chapter had a very good time together and you all made us so very welcome. I feel that we shouldn't mention the food. I don't think I have been in a retreat house where the food is such a standard. We will look forward to a visit in the future.
Just to say that all of us from St Pauls again thoroughly enjoyed our weekend retreat at Shepherds Dene. As usual, we all had magnificent attention from Moira, Barbara, Marian and all the staff and out tiniest whim was catered for. Tell me where you can get better!
Just carry on doing what you're doing! I felt part of the family in this beautiful, peaceful, spirit-nourishing place. A priceless experience.
